HP had some big plans for WebOS as their flagship mobile product, the TouchPad. WebOS was a true multitasking OS; intuitive, easy to use, fast, and stable. What happened is something that’s being debated still on many corners of the internet, but we didn’t want to talk about the past today. Today is about the tablet that could-have-been: The TouchPad Go. One of these turned up and, despite never being available for sale, it was given an actual review.
Few months back Todd Bradley,executive vice president of HP’s personal systems group,said HP has never considered giving up on tablets or wavering from producing Windows tablets.
and had a few interesting things to say about webOS. Ready? “I think from a webOS perspective that’s kind of the next piece of work to complete … The whole team of Meg, Cathie, myself, John Visentin are working very, very hard and as quickly as we can to make the right decisions about that product." So finally here it is.
The TouchPad Go a 7-inch version of its famous brother the (9.7-inch) TouchPad. It boasts a 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM, for those aching for product specs. Important to note here is that the screen isn’t the normal 16:10 ratio; HP opted to go with 4:3 with a resolution of 1024×768. This means the tablet can be pretty easily used both in portrait or landscape mode, which is pretty cool when set among the landscape-weighted tablet market today (not that the Touchpad Go will ever make it to market).
Given its dimensions, this tablet looks like it could have made a bit of a splash as a non-direct competitor to the iPad 2, if the skinny on its proposed release schedule is correct. Unfortunately, by the time the TouchPad Go's time arrived, HP's interest in consumer tablets had already come and gone.
In giving the TouchPad Go an 8-out-of-10 rating, webOS Nation raves about the tablet's "smooth and sleek" design, "solid" feel, and "fast and relatively stable" performance. Reviewer Derek Kessler actually seems to think the more compact TouchPad Go is a better performer than its full-sized, 10-inch cousin.
