Mozilla says a tablet PC based on its new Firefox operating system is coming soon. The first smartphones based on Firefox OS begin hitting store shelves in Spain this week, and with that launch some attention at Mozilla is now turning to a tablet, said Brendan Eich, chief technology officer for Mozilla.Firefox OS is focused solely on HTML5 applications.

Eich created the JavaScript programming language and is a proponent of open Web technologies on which Firefox OS is built.A tablet PC had been one of the original ideas for the operating system but development was influenced by community feedback, said Eich.

Foxconn is planning to hire between 2,000 and 3,000 engineers to support development of HTML5 and cloud software for products based on Firefox OS. Foxconn is the world's largest contract electronics manufacturer. It doesn't sell directly to consumers but to other electronics companies that put their brand name on the devices and promote them to end users.

7digital has already jumped in and launched its own digital music marketplace for the emerging mobile operating system. The 7digital Music Store is now available worldwide in the Firefox Marketplace, with a fully localized offering in Europe and North America. The service stocks 25 million tracks for users to browse, preview and purchase at anytime. It’s a similar service to iTunes, albeit a cross-platform one, with the focus on buying singles and albums on an individual basis, rather than an all-encompassing monthly subscription.

No time frame has been released for when a consumer-ready Firefox OS tablet will be released, but if the trend follows that of the Firefox OS smartphones, we can assume that developing markets will be the first to get their hands on the slates.
