Best Buy is bundling the HP Touchpad tablet with Compaq PCs, offering consumers the opportunity to buy the 32 gigabyte edition for $149.00 with the purchase of a new PC. The device will cost $599 as a stand-alone unit.
The 32 GB HP Touchpad was first released July 1 and priced at $599 — or $100 more than Apple's 16GB Ipad 2, with which the critically well-received Touchpad initially had difficulties competing. In August, HP reduced the price of the 16 GB Touchpad from $499 to $99 and the 32 GB version from $599 to $149.00. The gambit worked, as HP's online inventory of Touchpads quickly sold out.
HP announced earlier this week that it will release one last batch of 32 GB Touchpads (the 16 GB version has been permanently put to pasture) and that Best Buy is the chosen outlet.
According to Bestbuy.com, purchasers of any Compaq laptop, desktop or all-in-one PC will be provided on a first come, first serve basis with the option of buying the 32GB Touchpad. Best Buy will accept returns of the Touchpad for up to 14 days after purchase. Customers who return the Compaq PC but not the Touchpad will be charged $450 — the difference between the Touchpad's stand-alone and discounted costs.
